On Sunday March 22nd, the Great South Bay Society conducted a cleanup of six engine blocks that have been in the waterway for many years. As we did last year, we erected a gantry crane on a barge and towed it out to the areas in the flats where the engines were. These engines come from abandoned boats that have been left out there over the years. By our estimates some have been there 20-30 years. By my count there are another 8 or so left in the immediate area. I am sure there are more as I only found out about a couple of the ones we picked up within the past year.
Various people helped over the weekend to erect the crane and participate in the cleanup: Joe Sidor, Dave Hager, Mike Babich, Jim Westpfahl, Jim Reichel, Spencer Hughes, Mike Daly and Steve Brice. I want to especially thank Pat Rooney for getting in the water and getting a chain on each block, Rich Ubert for helping us obtain the equipment, Randy Ronback for the use of the barge and the Town of Babylon for donating a dumpster.
Thank you all for the support that you've given us. It takes a lot of effort to conduct these operations and we appreciate the help, donations and support. We look forward to getting you information about the annual Fall cleanup.
